What is an Initial Needs Assessment?
An Initial Needs Assessment is an objective evaluation that documents a worker’s current situation following injury including health background, functional capacity, psychosocial factors and daily-activity demands. Its purpose is to identify what supports and resources are required now and to provide clear, insurer-ready recommendations for WorkCover and other compensation matters. It is not a treatment service; rather, it clarifies abilities and barriers and outlines practical options such as modified duties, equipment, education strategies and referrals where indicated.
What is the process?
After referral and consent, an occupational therapist reviews relevant records (e.g., medical certificates, treating notes, job descriptions), then completes a structured interview by phone, Telehealth, or in person. Where appropriate, we screen functional capacity, consider environmental factors, and liaise with the employer to confirm duties and feasible adjustments. Findings are compiled into a concise report that details recommended supports, responsibilities and timeframes. The report is shared with the worker, GP, insurer and employer (as appropriate) and can be discussed to support coordinated decision-making. Any ongoing services occur only if requested and approved by the insurer.
